Why You Should Consult a Lawyer if Your Child is Injured Due to Negligence

Updated: Feb 3

As parents, it is our duty to protect our children from harm and keep them safe. It’s why one of the scariest things a parent can ever face is having a child injured. Whether the injury was intentional or accidental, the mental, emotional, and financial fallout can be just as agonizing as the physical one.

Some child injuries are minor, some are catastrophic, and some are fatal. It’s why many parents wish they could keep their children in their eyesight at all times. It’s also probably the foundation of the adage: “No one watches your children like you do.”

However, the reality is, because parents have to work and tend to other aspects of life, they can’t always be there to watch

their own children. It’s why many spend countless hours vetting caretakers. Whether family, friends, or certified professionals, one of the most important decisions a parent will make is finding someone they feel comfortable leaving their children with.

No matter how much due diligence one invests, accidents and injuries to children are bound to happen. Even the most attentive caretakers have falls, cuts, scrapes, and bruises happen on their watch.

Let’s take it a step further: Your child also gets some bumps and bruises on your watch. It’s an inevitable part of growing up.

But what happens when a child is majorly injured due to carelessness? Or worse, what if a child dies? We’ve all watched in horror as news headlines detailed a beautiful child who was mauled by an animal or left in a hot car for hours on end. Some of them make it, some of them don’t, some of them have lifelong consequences. Tragedy permeates it all, however.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, injury is the #1 killer of children and teens in the United States. And while some of these injuries are tragic accidents no one could have seen coming, others are “predictable and preventable,” the CDC says.

Nothing is more important than our children. Getting hit is a part of growing up for most kids. Obviously, if a child is severely hurt or dies, parents will contact a lawyer. But even if it doesn’t seem that serious, if the injuries are due to someone else’s wrongdoing, it’s critical that parents hold these individuals or companies accountable for the medical bills, and injuries that were caused. Those who find their children in the latter category as a result of someone else’s negligence should seek legal representation. While doing so may not heal the physical scars or erase the emotional trauma, it can help hold the responsible individual accountable.

Consulting a child injury lawyer can also help with medical bills and other associated costs incurred as a result of your child being injured.

If your child has been injured, you don’t have to face this difficult terrain alone. If it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes one to advocate for one. It’s like The Children’s Trust slogan says, “All children are our children.”
